Serving Hands began in 2021 through a desire to work with women, parents and their families following my own experiences of having young children

The origin of ‘doula’ means ‘woman who serves’, with hands being a primary tool for massage and in the support a doula offers -

SERVING HANDS

I aim to provide self care for you and your family, with physical, emotional and practical support so that you can thrive

We cannot underestimate the relationship between our bodies and our minds. We must look after both for our own and our family’s well being

Why did I become a Massage Therapist?

As a Mum of three I have experienced first hand the physical toll that pregnancy, infant feeding, (particularly breastfeeding), carrying and lifting children, lots of time on the floor, putting up and down prams etc, has on your body and posture, as well as the mental strain and anxieties that come with having children and raising a family. Pair this with our current world and lifestyle, which is largely device focused, fast paced, highly demanding and expectant of us as women to be and do everything at home and in the work place, and we can appreciate the immense pressure there is on our bodies and minds.

In response to this I wanted to provide women with a means to restore their bodies and minds in a calm setting away from their norm. Resulting not only in self care for themselves, but as a knock on effect, self care for their families too.

Why did I become a Postnatal Doula?

I worked with children with autism and their families as a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), prior to having my own children and knew that on returning to work I wanted to continue supporting families in some way.

My desire to support new mothers and their babies began and grew after the birth of each of mine and my husband’s three children. Having a baby, while often being such a wonderful time, is also very intense, and during the postnatal period we are more vulnerable physically and emotionally. We found that as our family unit continued to change, the support we needed changed too.

While exploring my options for returning to work I came across the role of a Postnatal Doula and what I’d been looking for fell into place. Had I known a postnatal doula existed I would have definitely chosen one to support me and my family following the arrival of our little ones. And so being able to do this for other families was the perfect role for me.
